The Kalahari Desert is 360,000 square miles of land with only one permanent water source-- the Boteti River. The sand in this desert is brown, white and even red in some places because of the layer of iron oxide that is on the sand. This desert is mostly featureless except for the Kopjes hills. The western part of the Kalahari is filled with long chains of dunes. The dunes are about 1 mile in length and ranges from 20 to 200 feet in height.
